STUDIO VISIT Echiko Ohira
ECHIKO OHIRA
In her studio
At the core of Echiko Ohira’s practice is paper; Folded, torn, painted, layered, stained, delicately manipulated and rearranged. Through sheer repetition, she creates a structure that can expand either infinitely outward or inwards, evoking both microcosms and macrocosms. We visited Echiko Ohira at her studio to learn more about about the processes and ideas behind her elaborate paper works.
For over 30 years, Echiko Ohira has created a vast body of work using repurposed paper, thread, and nails. Ohira’s initial experiments with paper referenced her own body and the pain she endured from a back injury. As her pain diminished, Ohira’s practice unfolded to encompass broader themes within the natural and spiritual world.
