In October 2023, a group of high school artists joined the Craft Youth Culture program designed to provide teens with the opportunity to learn from professional artists, engage in critical discussions about art, and connect with other teens. Participants joined artist Melora Garcia for weekly workshops exploring personal narratives and memory through hands-on crafting techniques and materials. Students took inspiration from current exhibitions and their own experiences and cultural heritage.
About the Artist
Melora Garcia is an interdisciplinary artist working between the Coachella Valley and Los Angeles. Garcia’s work takes shape through sculpture, ceramics, photography, mixed media collage and painting. Garcia has a dual BA in Visual Studies and Studio Art from CSU San Bernardino (2019) and an MFA in Sculpture from CSU Northridge (2023). Using traditional craft processes and material experimentation, Garcia creates a visual diary through the gradual layering of familial, found, and constructed objects. Reimagining indigeneity through the interweaving of personal narratives with cultural traditions, Garcia attempts to preserve memories through her art practice.
